Trip Description:
Day 1
Itinerary: (21 days)
Day 1

porcupine05a.jpgWe welcome you at the airport in Inuvik. Transfer to the floatplane base. After we checked our equipment, the guide provides you with a waterproof bag (approximately 100 liters) for all your gear. (We store the rest of your luggage; we’ll retrieve it on the way back.) Depending on the number of participants and the available aircrafts it will take one or more floatplanes to bring us to the lake. Prepared to be amazed by the views, flying over the Mackenzie delta and tundra with a breathtaking landscape. We even may have a chance seeing caribou! As soon as the floatplane takes off to civilization our adventure begins. We set up camp, prepare dinner and soon we are ready to spend our first night away from it all.

Day 2 to 16

anderson28.jpgOur first goal is to reach the Wolverine River. Normally this is easy; the lake flows out to the river. The Wolverine River is very windy and narrow. Without much current and low water levels is may be necessary to line or canoes through. During the next days the program is quite simple: In the morning we eat breakfast and break up camp. As soon as the landscape permits, we go ashore for a short and beautiful hike. At midday we stop for a lunch break. At the end car18.jpgof the day, we look for a good spot to set up camp. Camp life is a succession of tasks and we expect you to help the guide with these tasks such as gathering firewood, collecting water and cooking. If there are fishermen in the group, we can take breaks to fish for arctic grayling and pike.

Day 17

5 MacKenzie River.jpgWe arrive in the Anderson Delta. The water becomes mercury and silt. A little portage brings us to Tingmiak Lake, so we can access some fresh water. We explore the delta, as this marks the end of our canoe trip.

Day 18

anderson29.jpgWe go for a hike in the Anderson Delta and climb the Pingos. Perfect views of the beautiful landscape right to the Arctic Ocean.

Canoe expedition to the Arctic Ocean
Notes:
  • About your guide: Jean-Marc is a French naturalist. He is a qualified river guide, mountain guide and polar specialist. He reached the magnetic north pole, did a solitary crossing of Ellesmere Island and has more than 10.500 km by canoe in the Canadian north under his belt. A true nature lover, he now is preparing a book about the fauna and flora of the north.
  • As this is an expedition-style experience, we adapt our activities according weather conditions, wildlife viewing opportunities and group interests.
  • We do the camp chores together (fold and put up the tent, cook, do the dishes, gather firewood, collect water...).
  • This journey is suitable for everybody who is interested in life in real wilderness. No technical or physical skills are needed. You just have to be in good shape and health.
  • In August night temperatures can drop below 0°C, to keep comfortable you need a good sleeping bag.
  • Please bring waiders to get in and out of your canoe.
  • According to unforeseen and/or weather circumstances and wildlife observations the itinerary can be subject to change.

The Aurora Borealis in Canada is without a doubt a phenomenon that nature has so generously bestowed upon us, and thousands of people every year make the trek to the Yukon countryside to see this dazzling display of magical lights. In fact, at Nature Tours of Yukon, our guests by and large come to Whitehorse to take part in a Northern Lights tour that will likely render them speechless. If you would get a thrill out of experiencing the razzle-dazzle of the Aurora Borealis firsthand, we would be just as thrilled to help you plan a customized trip.

You may have heard about the Aurora Borealis, or perhaps even seen some captivating pictures of the Northern Lights in books. We assure you that these photos you may have seen can in no way compare to actually viewing the Aurora Borealis in person. The magnetic pull of the dancing lights in the midnight sky will lock your eyes in the upwards position, as you will not want to blink for fear of missing one moment of such exquisite natural beauty. The Northern Lights have been inspiring people around the world for centuries, simply because they are so wondrously captivating and magical, that no man-made display of lights could ever match their twinkling beauty and grace.

Lose Yourself in the Aurora Borealis Could you use a little rest and relaxation? Perhaps you could use a little reprieve from the high-tech world we live in for some quiet solitude out in the Canadian Yukon. Imagine sitting in a heated tent surrounded by pristine wilderness, with the Northern Lights being the only illumination around you. If you long for some peace and quiet, let the sparkling lights of the Aurora Borealis transport you to that place in your heart and mind that feels content just being the observer.

There is nothing for you to do but simply enjoy the natural fireworks display of the Aurora Borealis. You and your fellow travelers can enjoy some hot chocolate and good conversation, from the comfort of a heated tent or cabin, without any ‘To Do’ lists to worry about or errands to run or people to call. When you take a Northern Lights adventure tour with us, you can check your responsibilities at the door and allow the natural beauty of the landscape to envelop you and intoxicate your senses.
