Trip Description: During this trip we'll take in the majestic beauty of 22,000 square kilometre Kluane National Park, where large numbers of grizzly bears, Dall sheep and other wildlife roam freely. A region home to idyllic lakes, sparkling rivers, majestic mountains, glaciers and expansive wilderness. Here lie the largest non-arctic ice fields in the world with glacial valleys crowned by Mount Logan, Canada’s highest peak. This is a -No Trace- Wilderness Tour: Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints... Upon arrival by plane to Whitehorse, we'll meet you at the airport and transfer you to your comfortable hotel in downtown Whitehorse. Late afternoon or early evening (depending on arrival of the rest of the group) you will meet your guide for an informative meeting. The rest of the evening is at your leisure.
The guide will meet you early in the morning at your hotel to pick you up for your trip to Haines Junction, gateway to Kluane National Park. Leaving Whitehorse, we will turn west on the Alaska Hyway. It will not be a long drive and we will have time to make a few stops to marvel the landscape. have a first taste of Kluane’s atmosphere as we visit the Parks Visitor’s Centre with very interesting exhibitions and slide shows. After a hearty lunch in Haines Junction, we’ll drive out to Sheep Mountain Visitor Centre, where we have to register before we start our backpacking trip in Kluane. In the afternoon, we'll hike up Sheep Creek from where we can have a first glimpse of the Kaskawulsh Glacier on a good day. Up Sheep Mountain we have a good chance of seeing Dall sheep. Late afternoon we’ll drive to the Congdon Creek campground where we will put up our tents and get ready for our adventure of the next few days. After dinner there is plenty of time to relax or share stories around the campfire. ^TOP We’ll break up camp and move into the backcountry along Slim’s River. Soon after we set out on the hiking trail, you can experience the tranquillity and wilderness of Kluane. Every evening we will pitch our tents at a wilderness campsite and prepare a simple, but tasteful dinner. We continue to move further into Kluane National Park and one of the highlites of this route is a strenuous climb of Observation Mountain. But as the views and vistas of the majestic KaskawulshGlacier are unimaginably impressive, it is definitely worthwhile the effort. Then we return along Slim’s River. The route can be muddy and marshy in places and there are many creeks to cross.
This is our last day on the trail. We hike out to the trailhead where our car awaits us for our transfer back to Whitehorse. In Haines Junction we will have a late lunch, before we continue our way and arrive late in the afternoon in Whitehorse. We’ll bring you back to your downtown hotel where you can have that longed for hot shower and enjoy dinner in one of the nearby cozy restaurants. ^TOPYou'll take off on your own for your next adventure. ^TOPNotes:
- During our Kluane backpacking trip everyone must carry part of the load, approximately 18 kg (40 lbs). This includes your own gear, some camping gear and a portion of the food. We will carry the bare minimum and safely store your other belongings in Whitehorse.
- This trip requires some hiking experience. Since this is a route, there is no established trail. There will be many creek crossings; some of them can be very demanding.
- All participants must prepare their personal gear for rapidly changing weather; steep, rugged terrain and cold, swift flowing streams. Our recommended Chilkoot Equipment List forms a good lead when preparing your this trip, bust most important items include sturdy, well broken in hiking boots, gaiters, creek crossing footwear and a hiking pole (useful for creek crossings).
- On this trip there is a possibility that there may be last-minute changes to the itinerary due to the weather, park regulations or other reasons. We'll do our best to provide an alternate program of equivalent importance and value, and of a similar nature.
- You will be required to sign a 'release of claims and waiver of liability' form prior to the departure of this tour.
