Not for the faint of heart.
Nature Tours of Yukon’s Donjek Glacier backpacking route in Kluane National Park traverses 110 challenging kilometres of tundra and alpine terrain, more than a dozen creek crossings, two high alpine passes, and, to top it all off, arrives at the two-storey ice wall at the toe of the Donjek Glacier.
The Donjek Route is not actually marked or maintained, so it will be a real wilderness experience. You may rely on your experienced guide for route-finding and creek and river crossing skills.
The scale of this very remote terrain is truly humbling. You’ll find that tracks from wolves, bear, Dall sheep and deer are much more common than human footprints.
The Donjek Glacier Expedition is designed for very experienced backpackers. It is a very difficult route, with crossing fast rivers and creeks, rock fall, difficult terrain, inclement weather and wildlife encounters (Dall sheep, Grizzly bears, etc.).
Weather conditions may change dramatically, and September can already be quite cold. But you’ll be rewarded with a close-up experience of the magnificent wilderness of the Kluane backcountry. During the nights we may see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) dancing over the mountains. The views of the majestic Donjek Glacier are undeniably impressive.
If you're looking for a prime backpacking adventure, then get your backpack ready, strap on your hiking boots, charge your camera and join Nature Tours of Yukon for an adventure of a lifetime!
